Don’t assume your students know you care about them.
You gotta show them… every day.
Students don’t know their teachers care about them because it says so on the syllabus. They don’t know because the teacher routinely proclaims to the entire class, “You guys know how much I love you.”
They know because of how you treat them.
You can’t just say it. You have to show it.
When you stop and talk to your students outside of the classroom, you show it.
When a student is having a bad day and you respond with compassion instead of frustration, you show it.
When you notice something is wrong and take the time to ask, you show it.
When they lose someone they love and you call to check on them—or maybe even show up—you show it.
It’s often the little things that convince students that the big thing is true:
My teacher cares about me.
As educators, we should never want our students wondering where they stand with us. Our actions should leave no room for doubt.
And to the leaders reading this…
How does your team know you care about them?
Not because you’ve told them.
