Todd Whitaker famously said, “When the principal sneezes, the whole school catches a cold.”

As a principal, I believe that deeply. School culture is one of my most important responsibilities—and I take it personally. I’m proud of the culture in our building.

But here’s the truth:
No principal builds school culture alone.

Culture is not created in the front office—it’s lived out in classrooms, hallways, team meetings, and everyday interactions. It is the collective result of the values, attitudes, and behaviors of every adult in the building.

And that means this:
Teachers are never neutral when it comes to school culture.

Every day, through small choices and simple actions, teachers either strengthen or weaken the culture around them.

While your primary role is teaching students, your influence goes far beyond your classroom.

If you’re a teacher, here are five powerful ways you can shape—and strengthen—your school’s culture:

1. Open Your Door (And Walk Through Theirs)

One of the most powerful forms of professional learning is right down the hall.

When you observe colleagues—and invite them into your classroom—you do more than improve instruction. You build trust. You create transparency. You foster collaboration.

This kind of openness breaks down isolation and replaces it with shared ownership. And in that kind of environment, great teaching doesn’t stay hidden—it spreads.

2. Own Your Data—and Share It

In strong schools, data isn’t hidden—it’s used.

Sharing your students’ results may feel uncomfortable, but it’s a hallmark of a healthy professional culture. It says, “I’m committed to getting better, and I trust you to help me do it.”

Don’t wait for someone else to start the conversation. Be the one who brings your data to the table.

Your honesty gives others permission to do the same—and that’s when real growth begins.

3. Take Risks… and Let People See It

Comfort is the enemy of growth.

Try new strategies. Experiment. Push beyond what’s “good enough.” And when things don’t go as planned—talk about it.

Failure isn’t a weakness in strong schools—it’s fuel for improvement.

Your willingness to take risks (and be transparent about the results) creates a culture where innovation thrives and complacency fades.

4. Lead with Patience and Purpose

Every teacher has “that student.” The one who tests your patience. The one others may complain about.

But your response matters—more than you realize.

When you lead with empathy instead of frustration, you model what it means to put students first. You remind others that behavior is often a reflection of something deeper.

The students who challenge us the most are often the ones who need us the most.

Your patience doesn’t just impact a child—it influences your colleagues and reinforces the mission of the school.

5. Choose Positivity—Especially When It’s Hard

Negativity spreads quickly in schools—but so does optimism.

There will always be challenges. Tough days. Frustrating moments.

But the educators who choose to stay positive—who lift others up, who focus on solutions, who remind the team why the work matters—those are the ones who shape culture in powerful ways.

Your attitude is contagious.
Make sure it’s worth catching.

Final Thought

If you’re a teacher, making a difference is in your DNA.

You see the impact you have on students every day—but don’t overlook the impact you have on the adults around you.

Your words matter.
Your actions matter.
Your mindset matters.

They ripple beyond your classroom and help define what your school becomes.

Because the truth is…
Peer pressure doesn’t end in adolescence.

And in the best schools, it’s the kind that pushes everyone toward excellence.

Rock on!
