One of the things I always appreciated most about my superintendent was that he encouraged me to prioritize my family.
Whether it was caring for a sick family member, attending one of my child’s events, or simply taking vacation time, I never felt guilty for being present at home.
As a principal, I tried to create that same culture for our staff.
Educators are deeply committed to their work. They pour themselves into students, classrooms, lesson plans, activities, emails, and endless responsibilities. But no school should expect people to sacrifice the people they love most.
Our teachers’ own children are still the most important students in their lives.
And honestly, that’s exactly how it should be.
Teachers have already begun their summer break… or they soon will.
I hope this summer is a time for educators to rest, reenergize, and reconnect with the people and experiences that matter most to them. I hope they laugh with family and friends, enjoy slower mornings, take trips, read books, sit on the back porch, and spend time doing the things that bring them joy.
The work we do in education matters deeply. But for educators to continue pouring into others, they also need time to refill their own cup.
If today's message resonates, I’d love to partner with you to bring this work to life:
