No program in a school will ever exceed the passion of the adults implementing it.
Several years ago, our school launched a new initiative called Homework Café. Students who hadn't completed an assignment could come during lunch to finish their work instead of simply taking a zero.
The logistics weren't complicated.
Finding the right person to lead it was.
As my assistant principal and I talked about the program, we knew success wouldn't depend on the schedule or the location. It would depend on the adult in the room.
We needed someone who connected naturally with students. Someone who was patient, compassionate, and genuinely invested in their success. We needed a teacher whose encouragement would matter just as much as the homework itself.
At that same school, we introduced co-curricular clubs. Every student selected a club based on an interest, and teachers volunteered to lead them.
Again, the key wasn't creating the clubs.
The key was asking teachers to choose something they were genuinely excited about. Whether it was legos, sign language, chess, or karaoke, their enthusiasm became contagious. Students looked forward to club days because of the energy and attitude of our teachers.
Those clubs thrived for years—not because we had a brilliant program, but because passionate educators brought the program to life.
That's a lesson I've never forgotten.
Schools are constantly introducing new initiatives, curricula, interventions, and programs. We spend hours planning the structures and systems that will make them work.
But no program is better than the people who implement it.
Passionate teachers create engaging classrooms.
Passionate leaders build healthy cultures.
Passionate adults inspire students to care.
Programs matter. Systems matter. Structures matter.
But they are only as effective as the people who bring them to life.
In the end, schools don't thrive because of programs.
They thrive because passionate educators make those programs meaningful.
