Curriculum changes. Pedagogy changes. Technology changes.
But the qualities of great teachers are—and always will be—timeless.
If you’ve been in education for a while, you’ve seen plenty of change.
Courses of study come and go. Academic standards are revised. New instructional approaches emerge. We’ve embraced cooperative learning, differentiated instruction, problem-based learning, and countless other strategies designed to help students learn.
And then there’s technology.
We’ve gone from film projectors and overhead transparencies to interactive whiteboards, Chromebooks, and artificial intelligence.
Education is always evolving.
And much of that evolution is good. Great teachers learn, adapt, and change with it.
But the things that make them great haven’t changed at all.
The best teachers I’ve ever known have three things in common:
They are all about the students.
They know that content matters, but kids matter more. They see the student before they see the standard.
They bring positive energy into the classroom.
Students can feel when a teacher wants to be there. Great teachers create classrooms where enthusiasm, optimism, and hope are contagious.
They are relentless about getting better.
They never believe they have arrived. They reflect. They learn. They adjust. They keep looking for better ways to reach the students in front of them.
The curriculum will continue to change.
The strategies will continue to change.
The technology will definitely continue to change.
But twenty years from now, the best teachers will still care deeply about their students. They will still bring energy and hope into their classrooms. And they will still be working to get better.
Because great teaching isn’t defined by the tools of the moment.
It’s defined by qualities that never go out of style.
